Life

Starting off right with a good dose of
'"Jungle Fever," Rebecca Good and
Natalie Lodico take time to get to
know each other better as roommates
on Jungle.

Enlisting her brother Bryan's help, Jenny DeJong unloads
her gear from her car. Unpacking is probably one of the
most time-consuming chores a student has at the beginning
of the semester. Not only do clothing and toiletries have to
be unpacked, but also the room has to be rearranged and
posters/curtains/other accessories have to be added to make
the room livable.

Precariously balanced on a ladder, Ben Stewart rolls paint
across the wall of Rock Creek's new church building. Ben's
group helped clean up the yard and the church itself so that
it could be used for services.

a lot of progress during the Amateur
Project.

Starting up

ORIENTATION

it

Ora et Labora

pi

^^^^k rientation week - probably the most exciting week an incoming
^^^^ college student anticipates. Fortunately for students at Covenant,
Orientation isn't as difficult as it might be somewhere else. You drive up,
you drag all your stuff out of the car, a friendly-looking college student helps you
take your stuff to your new room, and you settle in with your new hallmates. Later
in the week, you get put into groups by major. Each group is asked to participate in
something called an "Amateur Project." This project is usually hard labor that
forces the students to become closer to one another as they figure out how to
overcome the challenge put before them. Covenant believes that not only should
we be servants in word, but also in deed. On the back of the Amateur Project
shirts, it states this goal: "Ora et Labora" — Latin for "Prayer and Work."

Working together as a team, AJ Estep,
Jeremy Brooker, Paige Weichbrodt,
Josh Mather, Justin Borger, and
Dustin Honaker help each other put
plants into the trash.

Proudly hoisting a newly cut tree,
Dustin Honaker shows that with
enough effort and a bit of elbow
grease, the work can be done.

Cindy Todd, Stacey Holliday and Charissa Baker stand
behind a counter to serve food at a soup kitchen. This
Amateur project was very helpful in helping its members
get to know each other a lot better through interaction.

Grooving at

Cartoon Kilter

with painted faces

«TlM uys, it's just not fair that you always have to ask the girls out, is it?

«^M& Well Kilter helps change this trend. For the women brave enough to
^^^^ ask a guy to a dance. Kilter is the place to be. Similar to a "Sadie

Hawkins Day" dance, females are forced to come up with creative ideas for
getting their dates to agree to come. Some girls used different objects to spell the
word Kilter, while others just came up with a play on words for their guy's name.
This year Kilter was held at Miller Plaza in downtown Chattanooga. The glass
walls and the lights were a great effect for the atmosphere. This year's theme
for Kilter was "Kartoon Kilter." Each couple or group had to dress up as a
cartoon character from TV or movies. While Disney was popular, TV charac-
ters were hardly rare and there was even a group of raptors lurking around.

With not much time to spare, Martha

Ball, Meg Deaver, and Jeremy

Brooker all came up with last-minute

ideas. Martha came as Lady from

Lady and the Tramp, while Meg was

Mary Jane and Jeremy was

Spiderman from the cartoon

Spiderman.

As one part of a big group, Jessica

Novikoff and Lael Galardi represent

Tinkerbelle and Peter Pan. The girls

went with a large group of people

who all dressed up as different

characters from the Disney movie

Peter Pan.

After dancing for a while, Jeremy

Brooker and Matt Fray decided to

take a swim in the fountain outside

Miller Plaza. The air was so hot

and humid that many people had

the same thought - anything to get

rid of the heat!

Coming up with a creative idea for three women, Gretchen

Lee, Rebecca Tuggy, and Linnea Minich decided on the

fairies from Sleeping Beauty. For such a creative costume.

the group won the "Best Group Costume" award.

Talking with one another while

watching the drinks, Adam Bel/

(dressed as Woody from Toy Story)

and Erika Olson (dressed as

Pocahontas) discuss how hot it is and

how they believe that someone should

have broutiht more ice.

With a giant grin for the camera. Ken Montgomery and

Emily Hitchman try to keep their face paint in tact. The

two were dressed as Animaniac characters from the TV

show "Animaniacs." The couple has a reason to grin:

they're now engaged.

Following the trend of Disney costumes, Justin Johnson

and Rachel Watanabe keep themselves in character. The

couple decided to go as Lilo and Stitch, two cartoons from a

movie that had just recently been released.

Concentrating on picking his acoustic
guitar, Siler's Bald's lead singer Shane
Williams holds the spotlight. Along
with the rest of the band, Shane was
willing to talk to any of the students
who stayed afterward to talk or get
autographs signed.

Singing from her heart, Jeanne Nunallee wows her audience.
Jeanne played at Greyfriar's coffee house along with Malt
Sloan and Jordan Chapell one evening. Quite a few
Covenant students were able to make it into the tiny coffee
house to support their friends.

Listening intently to Jeanne Nunallee's performance, Betsy
Haluska and Matt Sloan focus in on Jeanne's talent. Later
in the evening. Matt also played his guitar and sang.

Singing with all her heart, Nicole
Lewin sings at a vocal conceit. The
concerts were decently well-attended
by the student body as well as some
people in the community.

Rock, classical, R & B

Concerts

light up the stage

■ il Hit a wide variet) of tastes in music, students in college don't all go
^P^^ to the same sorts of concerts. For Covenant students, that doesn't
seem to be a problem since there are different types of concerts playing
almost every weekend. As Dr. Steele and Dr. Anderson get together choirs and
orchestras for those who enjoy more classical music, CAB is busy hiring singers
like Nicole C. Mullins and alternative rock bands such as the Christian band Siler's
Bald. No matter how big the artist(s), each group or person requires a team to set
up a stage and to run the sound equipment for their performance.

Posing with the portrait of Craig
Lyons, Silers Bald admires the work.
The band really liked the picture and
wanted their group shot to be taken
with Craig Lyons' portrait.

Playing one of her famous tunes,
Nicole C. Mullins dazzles the
Covenant crowd. The artist's
performance on the chapel lawn was
one of the first CAB events in the
2002-2003 school year.

Performing a required concert that the student body was
invited to attend, Rebecca Tuggy accompanies Jenny Brown
while Sarah Funke turns pages.

Peeking out from behind a snow-
covered tree, Jenny DeJong and Eliza
Coulter make a pretty picture.
Although the snow makes many
people have red and runny noses,
those that don't see snow much (and
even many that do) still love to play in
it.

Gripping on tightly to the sides of her toboggan, Melanie
Bosnia gets ready to sled down a snowy hill. Although
sledding may be fun, people have to make sure that they
take proper precautions before sliding down just any hill.
The sledding paths could be icy and trees could get in the
way.

Huddling closely to one another, Lola Rodriguez, Jasmine
Cox, and Charissa Baker stand out in the cold. Fortunately
for these girls, they had warm clothes, hats, and scarves to
bundle against the weather. Many students, not expecting
the extreme cold, did not have their warmest clothing.

A large group of approximately 1 5-20
Covenant students decided one
evening to build a gigantic snowman.
With the amount of snow that had
fallen, it wasn't too hard to find the
snow. The hard part was making it all
stick together in the shape of a
snowman and finding a way to get to
the top to add more snow.

Frosty January

Snow Days

mako people bundle up

^^^^ nexpected freezes make for happy college students. When snow
^^^^ days conic, school has to be cancelled because n is too dangerous foi
many professors to drive to their classes. So, instead of trudging to class,
students play in the snow. They make snowballs and they have snowball fights.
They make snow angels, snow cones, snow men, etc... But it's not just what you
do with the snow, it's what you do on the snow as well. Despite warnings, many
students grab tobaggans and head for the hills to go sledding. Some students take
folding chairs, matresses, trash can lids, dinner trays, or anything else that could
possibly slide in the snow. Whatever one does in or with the snow, it helps every-
one avoid homework!

The head of the gigantic snowman
somehow got transplanted to the
chapel steps after several days of
melting snow.

One of the worst things that snow
does is make the steps slippery.
Numerous students sprained their
ankles trying to walk up or down
slippery steps that were covered in
ice.

Amazingly one morning, there was ice all over everything,
but no snow remained on the ground. The ice, moved all
night by wind, was shaped in sideways icicles.

In order to attract more attention to the
courtyard between MacLellan and
Founders, Dan Adams and several
others of the Pipe and Drums coips
played music.

Cheering on the men's soccer team, a group of girls from 4th
South in Carter show off their new Covenant t-shirts. The
soccer game against Bryan produced some very intense fan
reactions on both sides. However, Covenant's talented team
pulled off another win despite the rallying of the Bryan
fans.

Taking off his bandana blindfold. Bo Lancaster wants to
check and see the damage he's done. The pinata was part of
the fundraiser for MacLellan Council.

Toting his drum. Matt Fray
provides an extra bass line for the
music created during the fundraiser
selling Covenant t-shirts.

We have

COVENANT SPIRIT

through and through

'^^^^ hether it's at a soccer game with dozens of other fans or at a volley-
^^^^ ball game with only a few loyal fans, you can always tell Covenant
has Spirit. Most Covenant students, when asked if they own a Covenant t-
shirt, would reply, "Only one?" When the guy's soccer team went to the NAIA
finals, Covenant Spirit was very apparent. While other teams had only a few
straggling fans. Covenant brought a busload and more full of students, all willing to
freeze their fingers and chap their lips to yell "We are the Scots, we come from the
Mountain!" while waving the blue and white of the Scottish flag.

Braving the cold with bare chests.
Ellis Chaplin, Rob Chaplin, Justin
Borger, Christopher Taylor, Justin
Johnson, and Nathan Hall prove just
how much spirit they have and how
much they're willing to give to
support their team.

Applauding a good play by the
basketball team, Katie Randolph,
Lauren Burr, Rachel Demoss. Betsy
Moran, Kelly Anderson, and Todd
Willison proudly wear their Covenant
vs. Bryan t-shirts.

Selling t-shirts as a fundraiser for MacLellan Council, Bo
Lancaster, Beth Sloan, and Emily Gosselink try to convince
Joanna Mikhail that she too should join the throng of those
who have already bought the shirts.

what happens on

Skit Nights

when people go crazyp

torn Greased Lightning to a eowboy hat, every outfit during a dorm's

skit night is unique. But that's really the point, isn't it? To come up

with something unique that nobody else has done yet. To win the prize for

having the best skit. People use various techniques to achieve what they think will

be the best skit. Some include faculty or staff members in their skits. Some do the

most outrageous thing they can think of. In the Tour de Carter skits, many times

people just go for the "shock value" of their skit. Catacombs often has the same

idea for their skits in Founder's skit night. However your friends feel the skit may

have gone, it's completely up to the judges to decide who wins overall. So the best

bet is probably to figure out what the judges want and stick to that.

Keeping up with the tradition of

Rivendell and the J.R.R. Tolkein tales

of hobbits, dwarfs, and elves,

Rivendell creates a skit with fancy

costumes and lots of planning.

Rivendell even had a movie to start

off their skit.

Planning only a minute beforehand.
Ghetto decides to do a stunt which
includes playing a game that causes
Chet Hutchinson to receive an
"atomic wedgie." Ghetto got third
place in the skit portion of Tour de
Carter.

After digging through their wardrobes to find just the right

thing, the girls on Balcony created outfits to stereotype

different kinds of sirls in school.

Dr. Niel Nielson poses as "the perfect

guy" in Jungle's skit during Founder's

skit night. The hall chose to go

through different "types" of guys,

turning down the thought of dating

each one, until finally a good Christian

guy from UTC shows up - namely.

Dr. Nielson.

Waiting for his cue to begin. Jared

Farquar stands alone on the stage to

begin the Blackwatch skit. Blackwatch

won the Founders Skit Night with their

skit making fun of shorts with text on

the back of them.

Starting his leap over several chairs, Joe Faust is encouraged
by Mike Schout. Joe's hall, 2nd South, won the skit
portion of Tour de Carter with their agility and skill in being
able to leap over numerous chairs from the Great Hal

DJing his hall's skit Bob Nickles goes for shock value with
an outfit that appears to consist of a suspended box with a

cummerbund.

!

Debuting for the first time on stage,
John Uthlaut tries out a new song he's
written. John performed with Dave
Fidati, alternating between lead and
backup.

Breaking with the trend of playing guitar, Dan Adams sits
behind his drum set. Dan played with four other guys, Rob
Holmes, Seth Park, Kyle MacKillop, and Tim Fridsma.
The group, called "Served to Raise," played two songs:
"Red Orange" and "Become New."

Playing as a part of a larger group band, Bo Lancaster sports
the head of a raptor. Bo was one of the group of guys who
went to kilter dressed as raptors.

Standing at ease while singing her
song. Bekah Stortz impresses her
audience with her vocal range. Bekah
is no stranger to the microphone, she
has recorded several songs on cd and
she often leads the worship songs at
Reformed University Fellowship on
campus.

Burning at

The Stage

during homecoming

■ ! ! 1 t s a tradition. Every homecoming, every year, students get ready to
^^^^ perform on a makeshift stage out on Highlands soccer field. Man)
students drive to the field because it is pretty far to walk. However, some
do make the trek all the way there. It's just worth it. Upon arriving, students are
greeted by a blazing bon fire and the smell of roasting marshmallows, melted
chocolate, sweet cinnamon apple cider, and of course, hot chocolate. Unlike most
performances. Burning at the Stage is a "drop-in" type of event, though many
people stay through the whole thing to hear everybody and to critique those who
performed. For first time performers, Burning at the Stage is a good experience
because it's dark outside, but there is a giant light shining in the performer's eyes,
so he or she cannot see his or her audience.

Many students have either taught
themselves how to play the guitar or
learned from someone they know. In
either case, the guitar was certainly
the most popular instrument at
Burning at the Stage.

Playing a song he wrote himself. Dave
Fidati gives his full attention to his
music. The name of the song Dave
played for Burning at the Stage was
called, "I Wish I Could."

Getting into the emotion of their music, Jordan Chapell.
Matt Sloan, and Patrick Moore create a powerful trio.

realize what an integral part of jazz
music the bass instrument is.

Getting into the true spirit of the event. Tabitha Higgins
dances with alumni Tim Larson. After living on Lookout
Mountain for a number of years, Tabitha knows quite a few
alumni.

Twisting his partner around, Nathan Hall proves that he's

every homecoming. The jazz concert is mostly hosted by CAB but is also sup-
ported by the Alumni Association of Covenant College. The event is done in order
to get the students together with alumni to meet each other and to get to know one
another better. In the 2002-2003 school year, a jazz band by the name of Meta4
was hired to play at the overlook. The band played off the word "metaphor" to
create a unique band name.

Keeping time with the rest of the
band, the drummer of Meta4 taps out
his own rhythm. The rhythm of a
drum makes it easier to keep time
when dancing as well.

Trying out her swing moves.

All that

Studying

makes for good grades

nd good grades reflect that we're getting the best of what Covenant
College has to offer: a solid liberal arts education which views the
world from the perspective of truth. We're diverse in our back-
grounds, our looks, our interests, our gifts and our study habits, but we all
strive to use our education to bring glory to God and serve in his kingdom. We
study, debate, meditate, and pray, and in all things we lift up Christ pre-
eminent! We see ourselves as his ambassadors, eager to reflect our Lord in

everything we do.

^^^^ dents decided to ignore the beaches oi Florida and head to com
pletely different cultures altogether. The trips allow the students to see a
different aspect of life than they would normally be in contact with up on the
secluded Lookout Mountain. They also allow the students to get to know one
another better in a more personal way, working through challenges of hard labor
and tight living space. The main purpose of the trips however, is to get to know
God a little more personally and to see Him as a God of all cultures - for both the
"Jews" and the "Gentiles."

Relaxing with the children at the Esperanza Mission. Rachel

Raising funds for the

Bowery Mission

Benefits many people

\ ! j n hose that headed to New York for the Bowery Mission there had to do

1HU|A quite a bit of planning to allow themselves to get there. Not only did

^^ each individual have to make sure his or her Spring Break was free,

but he or she also had to gain support through letters and other means. One of

the best fundraisers done for those going on the Bowery Mission trip was the

Bowery Benefit concert, which was made up of many different performers all

heading to New York for their Spring Breaks.

Praising the Lord with joyful singing

and with clapping and dancing, the

Gospel choir certainly makes their

point. God should be praised in

whatever endeavors we undertake -

whether it be spending Spring Break

on the beach or in a shelter witnessing

to a homeless man your own age.

Full of hype and energy. Michelle

Higgins takes over the conducting of

the gospel choir. Michelle felt that

her part to contribute to the drawing

in of support would be to involve the

gospel choir in the benefit concert.

With two very different stringed instruments and a drum

set, the band Infradig has no problem creating their own

unique style. The band's drummer, got involved in the

concert through his mother. Susan Green.

Doing his part to help out the

Bowery Mission, Jade Alger

contributes to the performances

during the benefit concert. Jade had

been to the Bowery Mission in a

previous year, and, like many others.

felt compelled to support those going

this year.

Introducing the performer to follow,

Susan Green cracks several jokes.

Susan became everyone's "surrogate

mom" on the Bowery Mission Trip.

Working with a capo, John Uthlaut captures the attention of

the crowd with his music. John bought his guitar from Dan

Meyers, who has performed at Covenant himself and now

travels around the world with his ministry of music.

Strumming his guitar to a song he wrote, Rob Heiskell sings
into the microphone. Rob was an integral part of drawing in
people to come to the benefit concert to help raise funds for

the Bowery Mission Trip.

In deep concentration, Kelly Ryan
watches the stage at Baker Tree.
Many students took the time to
sunbathe or study during the festivities
at Baker Tree.

Playing in the corner of the mailroom in Carter Hall, Josh
Green taps out a rhythm. Josh is part of a band called
Infradig who played at the first night of Baker Tree. The
band played a series of techno-style songs that a jam-
packed room danced to for several hours.

In an unusual position for a performer, Morris Yaegashi
belts out a song. Many students who were standing in the
back of the mail room during the Infradig concert were
confused, not sure where the voice was coming from.

Wearing a blue and white checkered
"Dorothy" style dress, Luke Carrier

O

few years back there was a guy named Baker who used to sit in a
tree which was located where the round area of the chapel court-
yard is now. People began to call that tree the "Baker Tree." Years later,
after the tree has been cut down and nobody has any idea who that Baker guy
was, we still have a festival named after them - The Baker Tree Festival. Prob-
ably CAB\s biggest event of the year. Baker Tree usually falls toward the end of
the school year to allow students to relax before the big crunch of exams. With
Inflated games set up and music in the background, balls flying through the air or
being kicked on the ground, the Baker Tree Festival has something that pretty
much every college student can enjoy doing.

Up on stage alone, Austin Branson
sings to the crowds below. Austin's
mom came to give her son support as
he performed live in front of so many
friends and peers.

Without the use of AV services, none
of the perfomances would have been
able to be heard. These individuals

college hosts.

anight of eating and dancing with friends. What more could you
ask for? Many students felt this way when planning for Spring
Banquet. With a delectable-looking menu at The Chattanoogan down-
town, the night was shaping up pretty well. Despite their hunger, many
students headed for the dance floor as soon as the music began to play. The
DJs began with a few jazz songs during the time when most people were
eating, but switched to rap when everyone began to pile onto the floor. Sev-
eral groups headed down to Coolidge Park after the banquet was over, spend-
ing time just hanging out with one another and enjoying each other's company.

In a typical line-up style, Rebekah
Meador, Lydia Fullalove, Beth White,
and Ginny Holton stand by the

Every girl wants flowers at Spring
Banquet. However, depending on
your budget, there are several
different varieties of bouquets you
can choose from. A dozen regular
roses is $14.95. A dozen sweetheart/
mini roses is $9.99. If your budget
can't squeeze that out, you can get a
pretty bouquet of assorted flowers
for only $4.99.

Stopping to talk to some friends, Micah Rayburn and Anna
Quirk take a break. Anna came all the way from Omaha,
Nebraska so that she could come to Spring Banquet with
Micah.

It was a new year and Covenant had a new president. We

welcomed Niel and celebrated the arrival of the Nielson family.

We wondered what he would be like, and we wondered what

he would like.

We learned, along with the things we learned in class, that

Dr. Nielson was passionate, that he loved God, and that he was

growing to love Covenant. We learned that he wants Covenant

to be known for an uncompromising commitment to the Lord

Jesus Christ, to his preeminence in all things, to the fact that the

universe belongs to him, and that he wants Covenant to be

known as a place that worships and serves God. He wants

Covenant to be known as a place that provides a rigorous

academic challenge and provides a first-rate education in light

of who Christ is and in light of the word of God.

We learned that he wants to fill the world with motivated and

courageous Christians — that Covenant should be a place that

sends people of God into places where the truth of Christ hasn't

yet been fully proclaimed and where it has been forgotten and

where it has been denied. We learned that he sees Covenant

graduates as warriors and servants.
We learned that he was a good sport and very willing to be in

hall skits and hall videos.
We learned that he loves meeting new people — at the college
and on the road — and learning about them: getting to know then-
hearts and strengths and gifts and seeing how he and they and

Covenant can work together.
And so we learned to follow our new leader.

Presiding as Lord of the Manor, Bill
Higgins creates a Medieval atmo-
sphere. He is often quoted as saying
things such as "Attention: There is a
carriage outside hailing from the county
of Virginia which has left its front
lanterns burning."

Performing mystifying magic tricks and telling humorous
jokes, the Court Jester keeps the guests entertained
throughout the evening. His face is familiar to those who
have been to Madrigals before, as he has been acting as
Court Jester for as long as most people can remember.

Dressed to the nines, Lynnette Oss, Alicia Belcher, and
Amy Deringer pause for a moment before going in to sit
down with their dates for Madrigals.

Changing from his everyday shorts-
and-t-shirt style, Jordan Chapell
wears a typical medieval costume for
Madrigals. All of the Madrigals
singers wore outfits that they would
have worn in an earlier era when
troubadours travelled the world
extensively.

Performers at

Madrigals

£

sing for their supper

tepping back in time, guests to the Madrigals performance are sent
to the Medieval era where clothing was more decorative and life
was simpler. The Great Hall is transformed completely when decorated
with the boughs and garlands strung all over the room. With performers on all
sides of the room, all of the audience has a chance to be close to the action, and
those people on the edges might get first dibs on their much awaited multiple-
course dinner. Not only are the performers put into a Medieval character, but the
servers, called "wenches," are also dressed in the clothing of a typical Medieval
server: long bolts of material sewed together in a simple pattern with a simple
cloth hair bandana. It is a privilege not only to be able to watch the Madrigals
performance, but also to be asked to perform.

Standing to sing between courses of
food, the Madrigals singers are forced
to eat within a specific time frame.

With arms around each other, these
friends make no distinction between
guest, performer, and server. Debbie
Nisbet. a Madrigals singer, performed
for friends Jessica Sanders, Heidi
Kaufmann, and Erika Olson while
Karen Turgeon worked in the kitchen
serving food.

Kicking back after a long performance, Andrew Kaufmann
lounges on a couch in Carter lobby.

Residence Life

Carter Hall

Resident Director:

Mallory Dean

Carter Hall has easily found a place in the hearts of Mallory and Jessica Dean this
year. They have found the students open and excited about new ideas as well as dedicated to
some of the traditions, some of which Mallory and Jessica are already familiar with. Mallory
and Jessica Dean are both alumni from Covenant and were R.Ais together during which time
they quickly became friends. The Deans started dating after graduating from Covenant while
Mallory was getting his masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from RTS in Jackson. Missis-
sippi. During Mallory's first year in Mississippi he was also a Resident Director at Belhaven
College and the next year Mallory and Jessica both worked as Resident Directors at Missis-
sippi College. After they were married in May 2002. they started looking ahead to returning
to Covenant to work as Resident Director in Carter Hall.

Jessica is an elementary school teacher at The Bethlehem Academy for Boys, an all
boys, inner city school. She loves her work there during the day and enjoys coming home
afterwards and building relationships with Covenant students. Mallory has a desire to continue
learning about Student Development and enjoys his work with college students. They both look
forward to continuing their work here and are excited to see how the Lord will use them in the
ives of students. Carter Hall has truly been blessed by their hard work and loving spirits.

Ghetto

Bradgon Luke Carrier, Andrew Calhoun. Ryan Chico.
Andy Coleman, Christopher Cushenbery John Downey,
Jeremy Elliott, Charlie Fenton. Tim Fridsma, Thomas
Harper, Matt Jelley, Mike Krom, Jesse Linde, Chris Marr,
Patrick Moore, Andrew Novenson, Jason Ogle, David
Phillips, Jeff Rausch, David Richardson, Jason Roebke, Matt
Sloan, Aaron Stanton, Ben Stewart. Dan Voogt, and
Jonathan Wilson

Ghetto is a brotherhood of intentional rela-
tionships that seeks excellence in all that it
does. These guys are deeply devoted to
each other because of their mutual deep
devotion to Christ. Their goal is to build one
another up as a means to building up the
body of Christ. As a unified hall, the unstop-
pable guys landed first place in Tour de
Carter and second place in Carter Skit Night
this year.

2nd Central

Kevin Struyk (RA), Adorn Belz, Jeremy Brooker, Collin

Matthew Gillikin, Tyler Grishom, Zoch Hubbs, Aoron
Jockson, Chris Kornmon, McGee Lapish, Josh Lee, Jon
Lillie, Dovid Neiles, /V\icoh Royburn. Dovid Robertson,
AAott Sloon, Chris Stanley, Jonathan Strauss, Ethan Struck,
Zoch Wood, and Mark Wright

2 nd Central is, in their own words, "The stage of a great
play'' Central is home to the Breakfast Club brother hall
to 3 rd Central, sponsor hall wrestling matches, and they
have Dot Hunter as their Hall Mom - what more could
you ask for?

2nd South

Mike Schouf (RAj. Brenden Allen, Derrick Allen, Andrew
Belmont, Kyle Bobos, Scoff Borger, Peter Brinkerhoff, Jordan
Chapel I, Tim Cobb Lincoln Defer Joshua Desch Joe Faust,
Jacob Feigl, Ryan Fisher, Lee Gates, Eric Hamilton, Darrell
Harkins, Jared Huffman, Ben Isenhoff, Eric targenf, Jason Luther,
Rob AAacDougall, David Macey. Josh Mather. Brien Meyer,
Jason Mitchell. Dave Page Korbin Parker. Ryan Petersen, Brian
Phillips, Cliff Stagnaro, Stephen Sfrawbridge, Stephen Swanson,
Joel Vogel, Bob Walenga and Noel Weichbrodt

2 nd South is a many-faceted hall. They boast being the largest
guys hall on campus with 36 men (and two girlfriends). Their
diversity is endless, representing 17 states and 3 different coun-
tries, not to mention Manville. They have two sister halls this year:
3 rd South as their official sister hall and 3 rd Central as their bio-
logical sister hall. The goal of the 2 nd South men has been pure
chivalry, having gained an impressive reputation for synchronized
standing when a female approaches the dinner table.

3rd North

Tomi Montgomery (RA), Debbie Anderson, Jennifer
Brandon, Joanna Doerfel, Rebekoh Emrich, Jennifer
German, Morgan Hall, Elizabeth Ka navel, Anna
Kaufmann, Buzzy Majauskas, Keri McGovern,
Joanna Mikhail, Kathryn Neiles, Veronica Pribyl.
Courtney Rayburn, Ashley Rigby, Lizzy Roukas, Anje
Suttle, Rochelle Taylor, Rochel Templeton, Ariel Trader.
Tatiana Trevor, Amanda Watanabe, Caitlin
Woodyard, and Hannah Zeller

j. ....^dti

3 rd North is a smorgasbord of personalities and
fun times. When you step onto this hall, you are
greeted with a small taste of the joy for life that
con be found in Christ. Descriptions for these
girls have included boisterous, studious, musical,
enthusiastic, involved, real, laid back, and creative.
The fine young women of 3 rd North are all differ-
ent but still love each other and are growing
together towards Christ.

3rd Central

Elisso Mother (RAJ, Melody Becker, Kelsey Benson, Beth
Brodersen, Heofher Burdeffe, Angela Childers, Louryn Clegg,
Mory Catherine Drexler, Jenno Fur man, Betsy Hal u ska, Stacey
Hollidoy, Lauren Ireland, Lauren Johnson. Kristina Kimball, Emily
Loderhose, Ashleigh Luther. Leslie Malone, Liz Mastin, Alecia
McClard, April Mininger, Kim Musselman, Katie Musselman,
Stephanie Phillips, Kelly Ryan hie id i Schuler, Rachel Watanabe,
Anna Weaver, Paige Weichbrodt, Rachel Wilks. and Tricia
illiams

As a hall, 3C is a small glimpse of the sincere love and
vital joy that is possible only through Christ. These 'room-
mates in the Lord' joined together in their creative and
performing genius to snag first place in both Carter Skit
Night and the Carter Christmas Party. Proudly support-
ing two brother halls this year Second Central was 3Cs
official brother hall while Second South was biologically
connected. The memories 3C shares are endless: Dress
and Go Freak Shows, the Betsy Campaign, 3C Wres-
tling, and more. Third Central, where every dinner is a
hall dinner!

3rd South

Lindsay Allen (RA), Paige Anderson, Rebekah Brightbill,
Kacie Brown, Ruth Caines, Rachel Camp, Lindsey
Cheney, Rachel DeMoss, Emily Eckardt. CJ. Eisenburg
Laurie Elwood, Laura Fearnow, Candice Hill. Janna
AAclndoe, Kaitlyn Newman. Tessa Petti t. Beth Phillips,
Katie Randolph, Hannah Smuda, Jennifer Vaughan.
Allison White, Katherine Whitmire, Aimee Wilson, and
Rachel Wofford

3 rd South = many different girls pined
together by laughter and crazy
doings. These young women reflect
Christ by learning to live together in
harmony by relying on the common
bond in Christ between them all and
pulling together to support one
another. On 3 South "they don't
have friends, they have each other."

4th North

Jeanne Nunnollee (RAI. Mary Bell, Kafy Butterfield.

Elizabeth Mono ha n. Erica Racen. Rachel Sasscer.
Monica Schrupp Aubrie Smith, Kara Smith. Jill Somers,
and Emmie Weir

*a ! M

xt-M,iA

Cool stuff comes in small packages
on 4 lh North. These girls go out of
their way to serve one another. They
have hod an exciting year together,
coming together to create fun memo-
ries; even though they haven't won
anything official they ore still remem-
bered for their self-awarded best
hall skit involving a kiddie pool.

4th Central

Alicia Skrivan (RA), Erin Aucker, Megan Barber, Annah
Kate Brakin, Kim DeWinkle, Julie Duke, Erin Gardner,
Crystal Geoghegan, Jenny Hansinger. Sarah Julien,
Mary Lambert, Amanda Lewis. Jennine McNeill,
Elizabeth Proko, Alanna Ritchie, Molly Scott, Laura
Scott, Megan Terrell, Lindsey Vasgaard, and Dana
Zandstra

4th Central is a hall where the little memories mean
the most, like the disturbing 7 fish casualties already
this year. These girls are unafraid to voice the inner
workings of the female mentality. "When a girl makes
up her mind, it is definite . . . sometimes" And, they
encourage one another to grow in Christ and never be
satisfied with where they are in their walk. In short, 4th
Central is a straight-talking accountability-keeping,
memory-making machine.

4th South

Jessica Sanders (RAI, Kelly Anderson, Martha Ball, Amy
Blick, Meg Deaver, AJ. Estep, Alisa Finkle. Meghann
Harris Emily Hud nail Heidi Kaufmann. Mary Kay toomis,
Heidi McKinney, Olivia Matter, Debbie Nisbet Erika
Olson. Jessica Sanders, Karen Turgeon, Anne Uthlaut,
Rachel Whitfield, Aubrey Wiener, and Kelli Ziemer

4th South is "the hall who cares." Home to
Olympic Sledder Anne Uthlaut and World-
renowned Chinese cellist Erika Olson, 4th
South is also a home to champions. If
Carter Council had an award for team-
work and enthusiasm, the women of this
hall would sure be winners.

Our Shoes
are on top of
the world!

"The paradox of spiritual growth is that as faith deepens and
brings with it new levels of joy and assurance, so also repentance
deepens, bringing an evermore profound awareness of our need
of Christ"

5th South

Chari' Emerson (RAI, Meogon Anderson, Koree

We have
an identity
crisis - we
are on the
central
axis, but
are called
south. . . .
what is
that all
about?

"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to
good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together
as the manner of some is but exhorting one another is so much
more as you see the day approaching" Hebrews 1024-25

Balcony represents the most
diversity you can get in a

diligently pursuing their

Mark Shaw, Phil Stogner. Ben Sulser, Josh Tiller,
Damien Volenti, David Walter myer, and Trevor Wilcox

I st Belz is a mostly silly, past gregarious, more than
thoughtful, often grateful, occasionally perturbed,
seldom lonely, beyond cool, nearly crazy, always
growing, never perfect group of gentlemen. Possess-
ors of the "coolest pink t-shirts ever'' I st Belz was an
almost exclusively freshman hall during this school year,
with 5 notable exceptions. Always up for a challenge,
these guys gave a fine showing at the Intramural
Cross-Country Race, coming in first place! I st Belz
reflects their Savior though Hebrews 4:14-16, confi-
dently drawing near to the throne of grace because
of the greatness of Jesus, the High Priest.

Jungle is made of up a bunch of Kool Kats
who like to stay up late, talk loudly, dance
freely, party with Blackwatch, wrestle, act,
think, sing, praise God, and fellowship
together. They are a group of godly girls
actively pursuing unity on the hall and
intimacy with God. An interesting and
often unknown fact about this crazy group
is that Jungle has traditionally enjoyed
talking to their brother hall Blackwatch
through the vent in their hallway. They
sometimes even listen to other conversa-
tions going on in each others hallways.

As light broke upon the reign
of Mesh the Jewish, chaos
roiled the waters: diversity
battled hegemony, community
warred with solipsism, joy-
sticks fought with drumsticks,
the hippie blueprints were
burned in effigy and the
drugstore was sold out of
Samaritans. It was a dawn
leading not the brightness of
day, but to an infinite under-
graduate twilight: we knew
not where we should journey,
but we danced by our fires
like the happiest of nomads.

C.K. Chesterton once said that God's
most secret characteristic is his joy, his
laughter. Whether they were wearing
women's clothes to dinner, mourning
the untimely passing of Jimmy Rollins,
or roasting hot dogs for Christmas,
perhaps the Catacombians reflected
this joy by giving the campus a taste of
just such pure, childlike happiness.
They further demonstrated their
Christian spirit by providing shelter for
Micah Parsons, who was the most
beautiful man on campus.

The Loft is a wonderful group of women who have
become involved in each other's lives through bear-
ing each other 's burdens, praying for one another,
laughing with each other and supporting each other.
The hall is like Christ in its unity. Psalm 133:1 says,
"How good and pleasant it is when [sisters] live
together in unity!" And. Ephesians 4:3 encourages
believers to "make every effort to keep the unity o
the Spirit through the bond of peace." Loft is a living
example the unity commanded in the Bible.

Blockwatch has a variety of types of guys living
together and interacting much like brothers and
best friends. They are a reflection of Christ
through their fellowship with one another and as
they seek to help keep one another account-
able in order to grow spiritually. As a well-
dressed group of Christian brothers, they
landed first place at Founder's Skit Night this
year by strutting their stuff in fine blue shorts.

In accordance with Isaiah 64:8, Gallery is a hall affirming
that they are all clay in the Potters hands. They are truly
a gallery of Gods masterpieces. The women on Gallery
desire to celebrate the work of Christ in each of their
lives, in the unique ways that He has created them. They
strive to create refuge and a welcoming atmosphere for
each other and all who come. For these reasons, Gal-
lery is a reflection of the unity in love and refuge that
Christ offers to his Beloved. And. in addition to their
widely recognized hospitality, Gallery has the added
distinctions of possessing a rubber chicken and having
taught P Belz how to knit.

Resident Director:

Emily Gosselink

Emily Gosselink is the beloved and talented Resident Director of AAadellan and Rymer
Halls. She is originally from Des Moines. Iowa and is the oldest of four girls. Emily attended
Northwestern College, a small Christian college in Orange City. I A. and graduated in 2000 with
a degree in English/Secondary Education. After graduating she worked as a Resident Director
and assistant volleyball coach at NWC This past July Emily moved down south and has truly
enjoyed her first year as the Resident Director of Maclellan/Rymer. And. while acting as a RD she
is also working towards her graduate AAA. degree in Higher Education at Geneva College (PAj
(two weeks in the summer and correspondence work throughout the year}. As of yet Emily has
neither husband nor kids, but she does have a pet gecko named Geicol She has also become
involved in the Vineyard Church in Chattanooga, which she loves.

This past year has been a busy one as a RD for Emily. Her list of memorable events is
rather extensive, including three major emergency room visits within two weeks in September and
guys breaking into her apartment to use her highly coveted bathtub. The Mac Council has hosted
several great events like the Bryan pep rally. Movie Night. Mac Christmas party. Dating Game
Assassin. Rymer Cup and various study breaks. And it's impossible to forget the Chi Alpha flood.
The Valentines dinner for ' fadies-not-so-much-in-fove" hall study breaks in Emilys apartment. March
Madness and the fun times of just hanging out with the men and women in Mac/Rymer!

Emily also has a great appreciation and love for her Resident Assistants. She says, "My
RA staff has been an incredible blessing — they love and support each other and me in an uncondi-
tional. Christ-like way. They're more than just a staff to me. but very special friends. We've definitely
experienced koinonia in Maclellan this year!"

Sutherland - Men who, though tossed back and forth by
the waves, are relentlessly at war with the flesh; wrestling
each day with Christ's call to Holiness and Biblical man-
hood. Men unafraid of who they are, knowing identity in
Christ as their only hope, stumbling and falling but con-
vinced of the power and work of their Master and
Savior Jesus Christ, the Cod who brings victory. Men
who have also taken a bath in Emily Cossel ink's tub and
who feel themselves to be the tentative winners of Rymer
Cup this year (just let them know when the relay race wiill
bell. Men who strongly desire to clarify that there are
only 2 Howards - not 3. Men who REPRESENT!

Last semester, this hall was simply Unknown: this semes-
ter, however, it has been distinctively named. Their name. THE
FIVE POINTS, was chosen because it reflects who the men on
the hall are. There are five suites on the hall. Each suite
stands as one individual point among five, and although each
point is marked by its own unique individuality, all of them are
bonded together in unity forming one cohesive body, much like
a star.

The Brotherhood of Lawrence incorporates a variety of men
who enjoy contemplating the feasibility of different schemes
and scenarios like freezing fog, prairie dog vacuums, and
woo woo whistlers. And, of course, the occasional company
of women is always a nice break from such consuming topics.
The Brotherhood reflects Christ by demonstrating what it truly
means to be brothers in Christ. Lawrence was the illustrious first place winner of the Maclellan Movie Night, the
dashing Alex Robeson won Maclellan Date Night, and the Lawrence Alliance valiantly defended many attacks
during the playing of Assassin to ensure a Brotherhood victory.

The World According to Aaron

THIS COLUMN IS NOT YET RATED

by: Aaron Mesh February 1 996

In today's troubled times, impossible homeschooled youths need help deciding what movies they should and
should not watch. This, as usual, is where I come in. I have waded through mounds of typical Hollywood trash, to
find - hang on to your hats, folks - more typical Hollywood trash. Movies are rated from '(typical Hollywood trash)
to *****(typical Hollywood trash). Let's begin

Casino: Using my fantastic skills of deductive reasoning, I have discovered that this movie has some-
thing to do with a casino. Don't thank me, its' just part of being a reporter. **

The American Presided:. All about a President secretly controlled by his raving liberal wife. No! Wait!
That's the story of our current President! Sorry. ***

Nick of Time. A thrilling, exciting, fast paced movie starring the famed Russian actress Nick of Tme.

Get Shorty: About a group of people who are overly tall-y, so they attempt to shrink-y so they can get
shorty. (You can probably tell I'm starting to have to stretch for humor here.) *

After examining the entertainment available, I say just skip it all. The best amusement around is definitely my
column.

Aaron, We love you!

satisfy your desire in scorched places and give
you strength to your bones; and you will be like

a watered garden, and like a spring of water
whose waters do notfail." Isaiah 58:11

What a joy you are to us.

As you know, Jeremiah 29: 1 1 is a great

footstool as you take each of those "life

season" steps. You are never alone as God

leads you into the future. Congratulations on

your graduation from

Covenant, 2003.

Love,
Mom and Dad

Rachel Naomi Templeton

"Shout for joy to the Lord,

all the earth. Worship the Lord with

gladness; come before Him with joyful

songs. Know that the Lord is God .

It is He who made us, and we are His

people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter

His gates with thanksgiving

and His courts with praise,

give thanks to Him and praise His name

For the Lord is good and His love

endures forever. His faithfulness

continues through all generations."
